Pushkar - Festivities under the Sun
Amongst the immense grandeur of the land famed for its glorious palaces and fortresses, Rajasthan, is Pushkar, the unique gem lying neatly tucked away behind the rolling sand dunes. Not many things in the world can match up to the grandeur, festivities, vigour and zeal of the Pushkar fair. The picture perfect Pushkar lake, surrounded by hills provides the perfect spot for the annual religious and cattle fair held during the months of October-November each year. A city of pilgrimage from the very outset of time, the over 500 temples and ghats of Pushkar generate a legacy of cultural and architectural heritage. According to legend, the creator God, Brahma performed a Yagna at Pushkar in his quest to search for an abode. The site also has the distinction of having the only Brahma temple in the world. The five days of camel fair witness huge armies of camels of all shapes and sizes being bought and sold.
Sites to Check Out
Each year in October-November, the laid back city of Pushkar becomes the site of buzz and frenzied activity that accompany the annual religious and camel fair. The fair is much more than a mere camel activity. It is an occasion for people of this rustic place to come out of their closet and enjoy five days of endless merrymaking and fun before returning back to their rigorous desert lives. Brahma Temple
Often ornamented with the sobriquet of the city of temples, Pushkar's most famous landmark is the Jagatpita Brahma temple. The temple is dedicated to the creator God - Brahma, whose four heads symbolize the eternal presence. The most peculiar feature of the temple being that it is the only one of its kind in the world, the fact giving rise to plenty of legends and mythological lores.
The temple perched on a hillock just behind the Brahma temple, is dedicated to goddess Savitri (the consort of lord Brahma). According to legend, Savitri angered at Brahma cursed him, as a result of which Pushkar became the only place on earth where lord Brahma is worshipped. A long series of steps leading up to the temple is always crowded with devotees who stand in long queues with great fervour, waiting for a chance to get a glimpse of the goddess.
