Day 14: Cochin
Proceed
to Cochin through the heartland of South Kerala. Experience the
backwater views and pass through the choir villages. End the beautiful journey at Cochin. Check in at the hotel. Cochin or Kochi consists of mainland Ernakulam, the Willingdon islands, Bolgatty, Fort Cochin and Mattancherry. These
seperate parts can be easily accessed by a ferry in addition to roads
and bridges. The unlikely pastiche of colonial flavour contrasting
sharply with the highly modernized mainland Ernakulam make Cochin one of
India's most interesting cities and the ideal setting for tourists to
experience the complexities of Kerala, all at once. Cochin's history has been quite eventful, which began in 1341 when a major flood hit the area and turned the land locked region into a natural harbour with tremendous potential for trade and tourism. Since then, Kochi was seen as a prominent destination for merchants and became the first European colony in India when the Portuguese settlers arrived here in the 15th century. Some
of the major tourist attractions included in our Cochin itinerary are
the Chinese Fishing Nets - strung out on bamboo poles, these exotic
looking structures introduced by traders from the court of Kublai Khan,
present a beautiful sight being lowered and raised into the sea at the
time of sunset. Mattancherry Palace - also known as Dutch Palace, the
vast structure was built by the Portuguese in 1557 and presented to the
king of Cochin as a goodwill gesture. Jewish Synagogue - the oldest
synagogue in the commonwealth, it has been standing proudly since 1567. Other places to visit entail the Santa Cruz Basilica, St. Francis Church, VOC Gate, Bastion Bungalow etc. Proceed for a SUNSET HARBOR CRUISE in the evening. This will be the best way to end your religious tour of South India. |
