Day 10: Tanjore - Madurai
After
having breakfast at the hotel, proceed by road to Madurai. The 170 km
journey will take us approximately 4 hours. Relish the scenic beauty on
the way.Stop at Karaikudi (Chettinad) en route. Reach Madurai and check in at the hotel by noon. Hailed as the 'temple town' and cultural capital of south India, the second largest city in Tamil Nadu traces its roots to more than 2500 years back. It is believed that King Kulasekarar built a huge temple and adorned it with a lotus shaped city around it. The city was named Madhurapuri, which later became Madurai. Freshen up and by afternoon visit the famous Madurai Meenakshi temple (dedicated to the consort of Lord Shiva with its towering GOPURAMS) - There
are four entrances to this amazing temple complex set in 6 hectares.
Beat some of the stone pillars in the complex with any hard object and
feel incredible on hearing sweet metal sounds. The total number of
pillars in the temple is a staggering one thousand. Other optional visits in the tour, time permitting, include the light and sound panorama at Thirumala Naik Temple or a visit to Alagar hills and Thirupura Rock temple. Overnight at Madurai. Evening Leisure Activities (Not included in package)
